The memorial was officially unveiled on St. George's Day, Saturday 23rd April 2005 with local dignitaries, Towton Battlefield Society members, the Company of Palm Sunday in 15th century military garb, children of the local school and the vicar of the parish conducting the service.

'Dacre's Cross' on the B1217 between Towton and Saxton, restored some 70 years ago by a Mr James Ogden of Harrogate. Although known as Dacre's Cross it does not mark the site of Lord Dacre's death - he was killed in the North Acres and was buried with his horse in Saxton churchyard where his tomb may be seen today. The battlefield cross - found in the hedgerow at the turn of this century, has been incorporated into this memorial. It may be part of the old Towton Chapel.

Built in 12th century and used by the residents of the village of Lead [now disappeared] especially the Tyas and Scargill families, tombs of whom are located by the altar with the family coats of arms inscribed thereon. Although some local tradition hinted that the Chapel played a minor role in the Battle of Towton, either as burial ground or as refuge for the wounded, this is not supported by any evidence in the historical accounts. It is a splendid example of early Norman architecture. Although the church is no longer in regular use, it is open to the public. The windows were reglazed in 1983 with the assistance of a grant from the Yorkshire Branch of the Richard III Society who still assist in the chapel's maintenance.

St Mary's, once the chapel of the Tyas family, stands in the field opposite the Crooked Billet. It may have given shelter to Yorkist soldiers the night before Towton. Earthworks in the field represent the vanished medieval settlement of Lead.

Towton Hall. The famous skeletons featured in the TV programme 'Blood Red Roses' were found in the garden and under the floors of Towton Hall in 1996, suggesting that it stands on what was consecrated ground - possibly the site of a chapel renovated by Richard III
